Cracked walls. Sinking slabs. Wet basements.
Foundation inspections and repair across St. Paul and the East Metro. Text us a photo of what you're seeing and we'll tell you whether it's serious, usually the same day.
How wide is your crack?
Hold a coin or ruler up to it. Width and direction tell you more than length does.
Hairline or thin vertical cracks. Usually shrinkage from when the concrete cured. Mark the ends with a pencil and date them.
Can let water in. A dry crack can be injected. If it keeps widening, get it looked at.
Wide or widening cracks, or one side sitting higher than the other, point to real movement.
A horizontal crack, or stair-step cracks in block, usually means soil pressure is pushing the wall in.

Learn more →St. Paul soil is hard on foundations
Much of the East Metro sits on glacial till with pockets of clay. Clay swells when it's wet and shrinks when it dries. Add a Minnesota winter and the ground around your basement moves every year.
Spring is the worst of it. Snowmelt saturates the soil while the ground below is still frozen, so water has nowhere to go but sideways against your walls. Many older St. Paul homes also have limestone or block foundations that were never waterproofed.

Common questions
Are basement wall cracks normal?
Thin vertical cracks in poured concrete are common and often cosmetic. Horizontal cracks, stair-step cracks in block, or any crack wider than 1/4 inch deserve an inspection.
Does homeowners insurance cover foundation repair?
Usually not for settling or soil pressure. It sometimes does when a sudden covered event, like a burst pipe, caused the damage. Check your policy and ask your agent.
Can foundation work be done in winter?
Interior work, including injections, braces, and drain tile, happens year-round. Exterior excavation depends on frost and ground conditions.
